Ed-Fi 104

Introduction to Data Management

Not enrolled

This foundational course provides a solid grounding in the practical details of Ed-Fi data management and integration. This course will also introduce two essential tools to assist with data management: Data Import is used to load data into the Ed-Fi ODS via the APIs, and Analytics Middle Tier (AMT) makes it easier to build visualizations and reports. This course includes technical content, but it is suitable for technologists of all skill levels.

Learning Objectives

The learning objectives for this course are:

  • Understand the benefits of adopting the Ed-Fi data standard. Adoption will:
    • Make your data more accessible.
    • Shift your work’s focus from data transfer to supporting people on how to use the data.
    • Integrate data from all your disparate, siloed data systems.
  • Be able to visualize your entire data pipeline.
  • Know what needs to be done to integrate data from a vendor that has not yet built an Ed-Fi API integration.
    • Use the Data Import tool as a temporary solution.
    • Understand that the purpose of the Data Import tool as a temporary solution to demonstrate the value of data integration and interoperability.
  • Understand what comes next when you have data flowing through the Ed-Fi ODS.
    • How do people want to use the data?
    • What questions are they trying to answer with the data?
    • How do they access the data?
  • Recognize the value of the Ed-Fi Community and data product sharing.
    • Share software tools and artifacts on the Ed-Fi Exchange.
    • Access and implement the Ed-Fi Starter Kits to get up and running quickly with an Ed-Fi solution.
    • Use Tech Docs to access technical documentation to support your implementation.
    • Access GitHub where you can host and review code, manage projects, and build software.
  • Know how to leverage the Analytics Middle Tier (AMT), a set of SQL views overlaid on the ODS, to build visualizations and reports

Course Outcome

By the end of this course, Academy students will:

  • Understand the benefits of adopting the Ed-Fi Data Standard.
  • Know what’s necessary to integrate data from a system that lacks Ed-Fi integration.
  • Understand the Ed-Fi ODS’s normalized table structure and the need for a denormalized structure for analytics.
  • Understand what’s possible once data is flowing through an Ed-Fi Platform.

Who Should Enroll

  • Data engineers and technical analysts who use Ed-Fi technology to integrate systems.
  • Technologists who want a detailed understanding of Ed-Fi integration patterns and available toolset.
